Headline – “Vending machines had eyes all over this Ontario campus – until the students wised up”

  • This headline came from an article on CBC that I clicked on out of interest when I was searching for noteworthy news for a discussion, and it resonated with me, enticing me to click on it and learn more. There are a few reasons why it resonates with me, starting with the format of the headline; the leading sentence divided by the dash at the end made me read the headline in a certain way, and makes it seem like the start of a story. There is a problem defined, and a counter to that problem stated in the title, so it made me interested, and I wanted to learn the specifics of what was happening. It also resonated with me because it contained a lot of familiar content that would resonate with most students my age. By using words such as “Ontario”, “campus” and “students wised up”, it is easy for me to resonate with this content, due to it being relatable. I am also a student of an Ontario campus, and it made me ask more questions because I knew the general area and range of schools in Ontario, so it made the headline more personal, resonating with me. This headline also used a unique power word “wised up” to describe the students, and this resonated with me as a strong part of this headline because it is a word that isn’t used regularly in headlines, and it pulls my attention back in right before closing off the headline, making me interested to read more. It also doesn’t fully explain how they “wised up” or what they did, leading to more curiosity regarding the meat of the story. All in all, they relied heavily on the fact that they had a leading sentence and a cliffhanger in the headline, and that resonated with me, along with the relatable factors included in the text.
