Question #4

As discussed in class, why do you feel Headlines are so important in web content? Please provide me with another headline you clicked on recently (submit the exact headline including a screenshot) and outline in detail why you clicked it. In question #2, I asked why it resonated with you. For this question, I am asking why you actually clicked on it. This cannot be the same headline as question #2 (8 Marks)
  • Headlines are an extremely important aspect in web content and getting a message across in general, because of the current state of digital readership. People would rather scan than read, so it’s up to the headline to be eye-catching enough to make them read it, and to be effective enough for them to resonate with it; it’s the only way to capture the attention of potential customers. It’s important that your headline is made well and effective, because if not, the reader will lose interest and may never have a connection with your brand again. Think of it as a first impression with a potential interviewer; if you make a good first impression, they’ll want to see you again, and remember who you are. If you don’t make an impression, or make a bad one, they’ll forget about you or – even worse – remember you as the one person with a bad impression, boycotting you in their mind from their interest.

Headline – “50 ~Vintage~ Images That Genuinely Blew My Mind”

  • This headline, found on BuzzFeed when I was just browsing news outlets, stood out to me and I clicked it to read further because of a few reasons. The first being the number 50, which is a strength to have in a headline, and because of it being such a high number, it caught my attention more than other headlines, enticing me to continue reading. When I continued reading, I saw the next word – “~Vintage~” – had symbols around it, catching my eye because there were no other headlines with a symbol around a word. Also, I am interested in vintage items, and I find it an interesting topic, so it made me read into the headline further. I then came across the adverb “genuinely”, which reinforced my trust in the article not being clickbait, and it is a power word, drawing more questions and anticipation for the article behind this headline. Finally, the power phrase “blew my mind” was the kicker that made me instantly click the article. This is because when I saw the topic being something I care about (vintage), tied in with a personal experience power phrase signifying stunning content – especially image content, which is easy for a reader to scan and digest – I couldn’t resist but click to see more, and I was not disappointed with the results. Overall, a great headline leading to great content, and I would assume great conversions.
